Jaguar XKE SII

A customer was telling me about his newly purchased Jaguar XKE Series II Roadster and how he was thinking of having us do some work on the car. He said that it was missing the convertible top bows and wondered how hard these are to locate.
Yesterday the car just showed up, no call to tell me it was arriving!
Whats the deal is with this car, is it nice with some minor “top rot” or is it a disaster. I am not a fan of wire wheels on cars built after the mid 60’s but are the wheels on this car nice or not?

um… my instinct is to say “disaster” but with just two photos and without seeing the engine bay, some body detail, and the interior I’d have to truly withhold judgement.
S2 cars are the low end of the pecking order of E-type values, but the open topped cars are at the top of that pile on the bottom, with coupes and 2+2s below. Additionally this one has oddball wheels (I’ve never seen those on anything but a S3 car) and quite literally the ugliest aftermarket hardtop ever.
I’d be interested to discover it’s VIN and compare it to other cars near it on XKEdata. Something about the proportions tells me that something odd is afoot here… but I can’t quite nail it down. Does the car still have it’s data plate? Or a VIN stamped on the front frame? (above the passenger side front tire)

The pressed steel wheels (similar to XJ6) were apparently used on some late Series II cars. I have seen that before – but cannot recall if ever on a Series II OTS. Gotta say the wires are old fashioned, but do look better then solid wheels on the E-type.
