No substitute for cubic cm's. and no argument there. I was thinking about Mercedes who chose desmo for the W196 when they had could not make conventional or hair-pin valve springs work at engine speeds above 8000. The engine design team and Uhlenhaut used the desmodromic operation because they could achieve higher crank speeds without any danger of valve meeting piston crown due to over-revving. 8500 rpm wasn't half bad for 1954 (Moss cruised at 7600rpm in fifth for long stretches on the final stage of the '55 Mille Miglia). I think the real take-away is that the V-twin is an inherently rough engine, and they can't take proper advantage of the desmo to spin high revs.

Well Jack, the deal is that these engines aren't like the F-1 technology found in Japanese motorcycles. Even with the "Desmo" valves they are like Harley Davidson engines where both pistons are on the same crank pin so they get noisy and vibrate a lot at high speed. If Desmo Valves really permitted high engine speed, more companies would use them but its really not a great way to make the valves open and close especially when you consider how some coil spring valve engines can spin.
Increasing the displacement allows more low end power so you don't have to be up in the stratosphere to make a quick pass on a curve.

"larger displacement is to keep the engine speed down" isn't that backwards? everything that I have ever read tells me that the whole point of a desmodromic valve setup is to permit high engine revolutions and escape valve spring trouble, which is why Mercedes used them for the W196. You are meant to Revel in the revs!

There was a shop in L.A., CA near by the Petersen Museum where the ex-Auto Delta mechanic boys were working and I saw them doing this kind of job. Also saw them using a light bulbs put inside the cylinders and leave them over night with the lights on to let the bore expands a little. It worked.

What a great trip. As long as you're in the Czech Republic, be sure to see Prague if you have the time. It's been described as being like pre-war Paris. I was there a few years ago. The people and the city are wonderful.
