Ferrari 308 engine is finished

The 308 engine is finished and has been test run with great success. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to video the engine running because Casey broke down the set up before I got there with the camera. Anyhow, no leaks or problems. It tuned in well and works well with the Crane Cams ignition that was installed on the car prior to us starting this project.

Ferrari 308 GTS engine

The Ferrari 308 GTS engine is coming together nicely and Casey will have the heads on by the end of the week. We Opened up the transmission to see how the synchros, bearings and gears looked and found everything looking perfect. The input bearings were pitted so those are replaced and for some reason the pilot shaft bearing in the bell housing was terrible so at near $500 we replaced this as well.

Stay tuned as we are going to test run this engine on the stand to make sure all is well with oil leaks and performance

1979 Ferrari 308 GTB

Here is a new 308 that we have for sale. It is a great running and driving car that is in need of a few minor cosmetic details such as painting the wheels and putting the urethane sealer around the windshield. I really like GTB’s and this car is no exception!

We bought this car from a customer for re-sale but we are not sure if we should part with it. The car is so nice, I would even guess that it is the nicest 308 GT/4 on the planet.

It was a nice 20,000 mile car that was repainted to an extremely high standard in a magnificent shade of blue. The interior is original and imaculate with all of original detailing. The car is so smooth and easy to drive that you do not even want to push it hard because everything about it is so relaxed and confident. What a car!

It has many records from new and a complete book and tool set.

Ferrari 308 engine overhaul

A 1979 Ferrari 308 came into our shop recently for a tune up and check over when we discovered that the compression and leak down numbers were too low to spend any time trying to make it run any better.

The engine came out of the chassis with usual difficulty, dirt mixed with grease and oil on top of the never ending flow of coolant spilling in your face. When people ask me how much to overhaul the engine I budget $3500 just to remove and re-install the engine to the chassis. It is a filthy job and no matter how many you have done you always end up struggling with one thing or another.

While the engine showed low compression in a few cylinders (60psi) and terrible leak down numbers on 3 cylinders (between 15-40%) there were no other major surprises. The water pump feels good, carburetors are clean and nice and distributor caps and wires look new and well done. This may actually be “just” an engine overhaul that does not lead into 1,000 other little things.

Black Ferrari Testarossa and 308 QV

A man called me one year ago asking for help locating and purchasing a nice Ferrari 308 GTS. He told me that a friend of a friend told him about us, the power of word of mouth exposure!

We spoke for some time and decided that the best series 308 for him was the later Quattrovalvole. I did not have any in stock so I called a good friend Peter Sweeney who at the time had one but a second one coming in one week.

I called the buyer and told him that in one week we would meet at Peter Sweeney’s and see the two 308′s, one red with a black interior and one red/tan. Both cars were well serviced and ready to go but the tan car was just a tiny percentage point nicer. We both really liked the slightly modified lowered Penske coil over shocks and the Stainless Steel exhaust.

I transported the car to the owners home and he called me nearly every day expressing his appreciation for helping him find the car and for how much he enjoys the car. The man was very sick from liver failure and was at the point of his life that he wanted to live his dream.

Not long after buying the Ferrari 308, he wanted another car. He did not know what to buy so naturally I was the first person he called to help spend his money. We decided that for the amount he wanted to spend a Ferrari Testarossa showcases serious performance for the dollar and I just happened to have a sinister looking black car coming in.

With his illness progressing rapidly, the buyer wanted to get the car as soon as possible and had a chance to drive the car 1000 miles before he passed away in early October. He was enthusiastic and enjoyed every experience of car ownership, the pursuit, driving, servicing, cleaning, and preserving by replacing minor worn parts such as the hood release levers that had cracks in the housings.

The black 1986 Ferrari Testarossa is for sale fully serviced two years ago and needs nothing.
The Red 1983 Ferrari 308 GTS QV is for sale with a super responsive suspension, nice interior and having a recent belt service.
